West Bromwich Albion versus Norwich City - FA Cup 5th Round Saturday 13th February 1982
So sad to see the passing of one of football's great players and gentlemen this week. Cyrille Regis broke Canary hearts when he scored what was eventually voted by Match of the Day viewers as goal of the season. Shaking off Steve Walford and Martin O'Neill, Regis let fly with a belter of a strike which left keeper Chris Woods wondering what had just happened.
I was 19 at the time and this would have been one of my first away games with the lads. Apart from the wonder goal, my only other memory was that a few of us found our way into the home end by mistake. We had simply followed some other fans wearing green and yellow scarves unaware that West Brom fans also often sported these colours.
Realising our mistake ("these don't look like our lads") we were swiftly escorted by a police officer into our rightful place to watch city's exit from the cup. I'm sure we still enjoyed the journey home and the beers to drown our sorrows!
RIP Cyrille Regis.
